Kendleton

Fourteen miles to the southwest of Rosenberg, Texas, you’ll find the town of Kendleton, Texas on US Highway 59 and Farm Road 2919. The town is located in the western portion of Fort Bend County.

The townsite is located on what was first a plantation that was owned by William E. Kendall. During the 1860’s, Kendall took his plantation and divided it up into several small farms, which he then sold to former slaves. It was this collection of farms that would later become Kendleton.

The New York, Texas and Mexican Railway company laid track through Kendleton is 1882. The first post office was built in 1884 and Benjamin F. Williams was elected as the first postmaster of Kendleton. By 1890, the town had grown to include twenty-five residents and a general store was built. Six years later, three more stores went up and a Methodist and Baptist church was built.

This church served the residents of Kendleton as well as nearly 2,000 people in the surrounding rural areas during this time. By 1900, 116 people were living within the limits of Kendleton, but it was difficult to get an estimate of the people in outlying areas.

As the church served many rural inhabitants, so did the town’s schools. By 1903, two schools had been built to serve the white children and three schools were built to serve the black children in the area. The population remained steady until 1933 when it fell to thirty-six residents.

By the 1940’s more people moved into Kendleton and the population rose once more to around 100 residents. This number continued to fluctuate in the 1960’s and 1970’s, rising up to 200, and back down to 150.

After the town was incorporated in 1973, the population surged up once again, and around 600 people called Kendleton home. The latest population count, taken in 1990, showed that this number had declined back down to 496 residents. According to local residents, the figure should be at around 2,200 for the population of Kemah and its surrounding rural areas.

Even though Kendleton is small, there are still many things to do in the area. The town operates mostly as a residential community, with many residents commuting to nearby Houston. You’ll find plenty of historical sites to visit in Kendleton and Rosenberg is just a short drive away. Rosenberg is home to forty-seven churches, a radio station and you’ll even find a newspaper for the town. The annual Czech Festival is a big draw, and celebrates the people that first settled this area of Texas.

Living in a community like Kendleton has its advantages and many apartment seekers have found it to be the perfect place to rent an apartment and commute to a larger city, like Houston.
