In 1908, the Immigration Land Company of Des Moines, IA founded Iowa Colony in Texas. Today, you’ll find it located in the northern section of Brazoria County, on State Highway 288, just south of Manvel, TX.
G.I. Hoffman and Robert Beard named the settlement when they arrived from Iowa, shortly after 1908. By 1919, the town had its own post office and more settlers arrived. Rice farming was brought into the area in 1920 and the residents quickly caught on.
Even though the railroad didn’t go through Iowa Colony, nearby Manvel featured a station and the town benefited. The population of Iowa Colony got off to a slow start, and remained at approximately 27 residents until the 1960’s.
Oil was discovered near Iowa Colony in 1948 and many employers came into the area. This didn’t affect the population much, as most people lived in Manvel or the surrounding towns. This changed during the expansion of Houston during the 1970’s.
As Houstonites went looking for residential communities, Iowa Colony became an attractive place to live. Many people wanted to quiet, peaceful life you can find in the suburbs, without losing the ability to get to work in Houston quickly. The location of Iowa Colony finally paid off and more residents soon arrived.
In 1973, the town was incorporated and although it had briefly lost its post office in 1961, things began to change. By 1989, 661 residents called Iowa Colony home, and this number was most recently estimated at 675, as of 2000.
Iowa Colony has many different historical sites, and you’ll find a community center, the city hall and the municipal court all housed in one convenient building. The town is close-knit and features friendly residents and a lower cost of living than you would find in larger cities.
Houston is close by and offers many recreational opportunities. Golf is a popular sport in this part of Texas and you’ll find numerous golf courses in Houston and the surrounding Brazoria County. The area is also home to some of the best amusement parks in the country, as well as plenty of shopping, dining and other diversions.
Brazoria County is very historic and offers a rare glimpse of Texas’ past. You’ll be just minutes from where some key battles took place during the fight for Texas’ independence, and there are many museums throughout the area where you can learn firsthand about the people that made Texas what it is today.
