Fairchilds

In the southeastern part of Fort Bend County, Texas, you’ll find the town of Fairchilds, located on Farm Road 361. Richmond, Texas is just thirteen miles away and Houston is within a short drive.

Fairchilds was named for Philo Fairchilds who was one of the first settlers in the area. He built a cabin that was located approximately one-mile from the town’s current location. After this point, more settlers came into the area and in 1890, the settlement was started by Charles Blohm, August Bede and Theo Alderhoz.

This settlement was popular with German immigrants and quickly grew. In 1896, a Mennonite Community bought a league of land on Big Creek, and part of this land included the original Fairchilds settlement. Fifty families soon lived there, and the community had a roads system, stores, and schools in short order.

During the early 1900’s the settlement ran into a few problems as many settlers left due to the abundance of mosquitoes and the subsequent malaria they carried. The hurricane of 1900 that devastated Galveston also affected Fairchilds, destroying many buildings in the town.

Only a few Mennonite families remained and they held on to their community. A post office was briefly opened in 1912, but was closed in 1918. During this time period, the town had only one store. The 1930’s brought change to Fairchilds and the population began to go up again.

In 1933, there were three businesses and twenty-five residents. Seven years later, the population went up to seventy-five. During the 1950’s there was a brief renewal, and the population went up to 125, and two more businesses were opened.

Currently, 150 residents call Fairchilds home and there is a general store, feed store, a tire store and a café. The community is still small, but close and the area is very peaceful. The cost of living is lower than it is in many larger towns and it is well located.

Nearby Richmond offers many different attractions. Richmond is the county seat of Fort Bend County Texas and each year you’ll get to take part in the annual county fair. This fair features some of the best booths, livestock and attractions from all over the county. You’ll also find several historical sites, museums and much more, all within a couple minutes from your new apartment.

Houston is also located nearby and offers some of the best shopping and entertainment in Texas. Whether you enjoy professional sports, golf, shopping, great food, amusement parks or horse racing, Houston has something for everyone. Many people in Fort Bend County elect to live in small communities, like Fairchilds, and commute to the larger city during the week. This gives them the perfect balance of a quiet home, without cutting them off from the conveniences of Houston.
