

Liberty County is home to Devers, Texas, which is located on US Highway 90 and State Highway 61. Beaumont, Texas is about 32 miles away, and Houston is also within a short drive.
The town was first known as Carter Station and was most likely settled prior to 1832. The town took its name from the Allen Carter family, but it was changed to Dever’s Woods after 1832, in honor of Thomas Philip and John Dever.
The Texas and New Orleans Railroad built a station in Dever’s Woods in 1870 and the population began to grow. By 1880, approximately 100 people lived in the settlement. A post office was built in 1874, and the name of the town was changed once again to Devers in 1892.
By this time, a sawmill and a cotton gin were built in the town. Rice soon became a popular crop, thanks to the construction of irrigation canals. These canals played an important role in the history of Devers. The town was incorporated in 1872, by a vote of 86 to 37.
By 1920, the Northern Canal Company was purchased by the Devers Canal Company, which in turn was later purchased by the Trinity River Authority in 1969. In the middle of the 1970’s it was estimated that around 210 people lived in Devers, but this number rapidly increased to 507 ten years later.
In 1984, a large discovery of oil and natural gas was found in a field in Devers. This has led to increased wealth for the community. By 1990 the population had grown to 318 and the town was home to twelve businesses, the Trinity River Authority and two rice dryers.
Devers is centrally located, making it a perfect place to rent an apartment if you plan to work in a larger city nearby. Several residents commute to Houston or Beaumont, returning at night to this small community.
The cost of living in Liberty County is much lower than Houston’s, also making it a very attractive place to live. An apartment in Devers will cost much less than a comparable apartment in Houston, but you’ll still be within minutes of the large city.
Liberty County is rich in history and offers many different historical sites. Liberty, Texas is home to a very historic courthouse that was rebuilt seven times. You’ll also find several small towns, each with their own unique story in Liberty County.
