If you’re looking for a quiet town just on the outskirts of Houston, Crosby, Texas is a great place to start. You’ll find Crosby on Farm Road 2100 close by the Southern Pacific tracks in the eastern part of Harris County. State Highway 90 is just two minutes away, making it very convenient to access Houston.
The town gets its name from G.J. Crosby who was a railroad construction engineer. The first recorded store was built in 1865 by Charlie Karcher and other businesses soon followed. Crosby quickly became a bustling center for retail businesses and shipping. Loggers and farmers took advantage of its location and used it to transport goods from in between the San Jacinto River and Cedar Bayou.
The post office was built in 1877 and by 1884, 50 people called Crosby home. There was a Baptist church, a school and general store by this time. The population remained stagnant by 1891, but a Methodist church opened, another general store was added and two livestock stables also opened for business. For some reason, which is not recorded, the locals report that during 1898 the town received the strange moniker of “Lick Skillet.”
The population began to increase and in 1905, a school had been opened, serving 122 students and employing four teachers. The population estimate in 1925 showed 300 residents, and this quickly jumped to 600 in 1929. A banking center was opened in 1929, but soon closed during the Great Depression.
The Great Depression forced many residents to move and the population dropped back down to 300. World War II brought a surge to the population that quickly jumped to 750 and then 900. This last reported population estimate remained about the same through the following twenty-five years.
By the 1970’s there were fifty businesses in Crosby and about 2,500 residents. These figures continued to go up and in 1990, over 238 businesses and 1,888 people called Crosby home. It is believed that these estimates are a little low and that more people actually live in the area.
