Bailey’s Prairie, Texas got its start in 1818 when the Spanish government granted 4,587 acres to James Britton Bailey a veteran in the war of 1812. He moved into the area with his wife and six children and began a plantation on the incredibly rich land. In 1821, Stephen Austin disputed Bailey’s claim but after a short time recognized it, thus granting Bailey into admission of the Old Three Hundred. Bailey took title to the land in 1824.
After this point, a town began to take shape around Bailey’s plantation and the nearby league of land that had been granted to M.S. Munson by the Mexican government. A new Methodist church was built in 1839 and the Rev. Jesse Hord preached there for some time. The town grew slowly, having only a church, a cemetery and a few houses by 1936. The majority of the land was still owned by local ranchers and had not been developed.
The population grew slowly but steadily over the years. In 1972, it was estimated at around 228 residents, and then grew to 410 residents by 1988. The latest population estimate in 1990 put the number at around 634 residents. The growth during the 1980’s and 1990’s was due in part to the development of nearby Houston as more workers decided to live in other parts of the county.
