Anahuac

Anahuac’s original residents were of the Atakapan Native American tribe and lived in the area in the 1700’s. They were visited in 1721 by the French explorer Jean Baptise de La Harpe, who found a village of about 200 people in the place that is now known as Anahuac. It was first known as Perry’s Point to Americans, and it is believed this name was in honor of Col. Henry Perry who had established a camp there in 1816.

Col. John Davis Bradburn, a commander in the Mexican military came to this camp in 1830 to begin building a fort. The town was later named Anahuac by Mexican general Manuel de Mier y Teran in 1831. It was named after an Aztec capital.

Before the Texas revolution got underway, Fort Anahuac was home to two large disturbances in 1832 and 1835. A large battle in 1832 caused the population to decline and in 1835, Gen. Thomas Jefferson Chambers and Charles Willcox began a long feud over ownership of the town. The argument was never completely solved until Chambers was assassinated in 1865.

By 1894, a large sawmill was built and Anahuac began to prosper again until the mill was moved in 1898 to Wallisville. After this incident, a canal was built in 1902 and businesses began streaming into the area. The decision to name Anahuac the county seat of Chambers County over Wallisville assisted the town in staying afloat.

1935 brought more prosperity to the town when oil was discovered in the area. The town was then incorporated in 1948 and the first mayor was elected. In 1963, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service designated part of the area as the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, and you can still find this refuge about 16 miles from town.

The population of the town has waxed and waned over the years and as of 1990, it was estimated at around 1,993 residents. Anahuac has managed to retain the charm of a small town, while still being conveniently located near major cities.

Each year the Gatorfest draws a large number of people into the town. It was first started in 1989 in September and a staggering 14,000 people attended the event held at Fort Anahuac Park. You’ll be able to enjoy a myriad of activities during this festival every fall.

Anahuac is rich in history and there are many different historical sites that offer an educational and fun look at the town’s past. Whether you want to learn more about the feud over town ownership, or one of the town’s more illustrious residents, Gen. Chambers, you’ll be able to walk out of your apartment and into the past.

Trinity Bay is also very close as well as the Texas Gulf Coast. You’ll be able to enjoy fishing, boating and a number of different water sports just minutes from your front door. Anahuac is a great place to set down some roots and you’ll be in some historically famous company.
